The Runway Overrun Awareness and Alerting System (ROAAS) is a safety enhancement tool designed to help pilots avoid runway overruns during landing. It provides real-time alerts and situational awareness to assist flight crews in managing deceleration and stopping the aircraft within the available runway length.
Key Features of ROAAS:

Real-Time Monitoring

Continuously tracks aircraft position, speed, and deceleration performance during landing roll.

Uses GPS, inertial reference systems, and runway data to assess stopping distance.

Predictive Alerts

Calculates whether the aircraft can stop safely based on current braking performance.

Issues visual and/or aural warnings if an overrun risk is detected.

Situational Awareness Enhancements

Displays remaining runway distance and required stopping performance.

May integrate with head-up displays (HUDs) or electronic flight bags (EFBs).

Adaptive to Conditions

Accounts for runway conditions (wet, contaminated, etc.), aircraft weight, and braking configuration.

How ROAAS Works:

During landing, the system compares the aircraft's deceleration rate with the remaining runway.

If the deceleration is insufficient to stop before the runway end, ROAAS triggers alerts (e.g., "DECELERATE" or "MAX BRAKING").

Some systems may also suggest actions like deploying additional braking devices (e.g., spoilers, thrust reversers).

Benefits:

Reduces the risk of runway excursions, a leading cause of landing accidents.

Enhances pilot decision-making during critical phases of landing.

Complements other safety systems like Runway End Safety Areas (RESA) and Engineered Materials Arresting Systems (EMAS).

Implementation:

ROAAS is available in some modern aircraft and can also be retrofitted.

Airlines and operators may adopt it as part of their Safety Management Systems (SMS).
